Create a Cool Comic Book Effect Using Photoshop

This tutorial will help you give your image a comic book look. I find this Photoshop Image Effect Tutorial great and I thought I should give it a try.

  1. Open image in Photoshop.
  2. Click Image > Adjustments > Levels
    Settings: 60 / 1.00 / 220
  3. Click Filters > Artistic > Film Grain
    Settings: Grain: 4; Highlight Area: 0; Intensity: 10;
  4. Press Ctrl + J to duplicate layer
  5. Click Filter > Pixelate > Color Halftone
    Settings: Max Radius: 4
    From the Layers Pallete set the Blending Mode to Darken.
  6. I have set the Opacity to 50% for this layer. This is a twist from the original tutorial since the image I used has a different output from the original tutorial.
  7. Create a new layer. Name it Border. Press Ctrl + A to Select All. Click Edit > Stroke …
    Settings: Width: 40px; Color: White (#FFFFFF); Location: Center;
    Again, this is a twist from the original tutorial since the top layer’s opacity was set to 50%. I needed to create a new layer on top to produce a white border around the image.
  8. From Border layer, create a rectangular selection in the upper left corner. Click Edit > Stroke …
    Settings: Width: 2px; Color: Black (#000000); Location: Outside;
  9. Gradient Fill the selection with Orange to yellow.
  10. From Border layer, create a rectangular selection in the lower right corner. Click Edit > Stroke …
    Settings: Width: 2px; Color: Black (#000000); Location: Outside;
    Click Filter > Distort > Ripple (Amount: 20%; Size: Medium).
  11. Deselect.
  12. From Border layer, Use Magic Wand and click inside the white border. Click Edit > Stroke …
    Settings: Width: 2px; Color: Black (#000000); Location: Inside;
  13. Add Text. Use Digital Strip Font. And your done.
